The cooperative 740 Park Avenue in New York

The cooperative 740 Park Avenue in New York on Sunday, September 7, 2014. A front corner duplex apartment recently sold for an obscene $71,277,500 after a bidding war. The sale was the a highest price ever for a co-op sale in New York and it topped the asking price of only $48 million. Originally owned by the French government as home for their ambassador, they bought it in 1978 for $600,000, it has six bedrooms, seven and one half baths and five fireplaces. The buyer, hedge fund master of the universe Israel Englander, already owns the apartment above and is expected to make them into a triplex. (© Richard B. Levine)
