In the styles hereshown, No. 1 is after the style of the Greek Fretor Meander, and it will be readily noticed that thesingle form resembles the letter S, but it hassquare instead of round corners. The dotted linesgive the spacing1 and proportions. There are fiveequal horizontal spaces, and six equal verticalspaces. For the horizontal stripes of the pattern,the first, third and fifth spaces are taken, and forthe vertical stripes, counting from the left, thefirst, fourth and sixth spaces are used. Thespaces are, therefore, the same width as the run-ning line. No. 2 was produced by doubling the former keypattern; that is, there are two of the S formsbrought together, which produce a resemblance tothe block T.
