Kyle of Durness and the Cape Wrath Hotel. Durness is the most North Westerly village on mainland Scotland. Durness also boasts the amazing Smoo cave, you can explore this sea cave by foot or by boat. Evidence points to human occupation of the cave around 5000years ago. Next to and slightly north of Durness is the lovely Balnakeil Bay which is easy to access and a truly beautifull spot. Cape Wrath is the most westertly point on the Scottish mainland and lies to the west of Durness. You cannot reach it by road and access is via a passenger ferry which crosses from Keodale which is close to the Cape Wrath Hotel. It makes the narrow crossing to the white house on the other side. A minibus connects with the ferry to take you the 14 miles to the lighthouse at Cape Wrath. After your visit you can take the bus back, but if you are equipped and fit this is a grand wild area to spend a few days, but I stress, you must be prepared. A lovely walk which is from Cape Wrath, south for about fifteen miles to the wonderfull Sandwood Bay North of Kinlochbervie. But if you just feel like spending some quiet quality time alone, then this is an area which will provide all the solitude time you wish. The area is vast, wild and wonderful. Despite the way it sticks out into the North Atlantic, Cape Wrath is not the most northerly point in the mainland, that distinction belongs to Dunnett Head. Cape Wrath might be a mile or two further south but the highest sea cliffs in mainland Britain are here, 920 feet high at nearby Clo Mor. The route to Cape Wrath was at one time a surfaced road, but it's in such poor condition now that your average dirt road is often better.
