The draw span has twenty panels 21 in. and one 22 ft., which are 21 to 55 ft. in depth. The turntableis entirely on rim bearings. The drum is 4 ft. deep and 31 ft. indiameter, being secured to a center casting by the usual radialbraces and spider frame. The center casting is anchored to thepier; it is hollow to provide a passage for electric wires. The draw is operated by three 25-h. p. electric motors of railroadtype, one for turning and the others for blocking up the ends. Be-sides these there is a fourth motor, and a duplicate set of turning. machinery all in place which can be used in case of unbalancedwind pressure, or a break in the other machinery. These two sel:>can be worked independently, or together at tlic will of the oper-ator. Power is taken from the Middlclown street railway wires, and a cable is laid on the river bottom, and brought up on thecenter pier. This passes in a groove under the wheel track and upthrough the centre casting. It was originally intended thai the closing of the gates should bedone by the operator in the tower, and in fact the writer made jcomplete design for electrically worked steel safely gates. Whilothese would cost $950 for the two gates, they would do away with tlie services of two gate operators. But on account of an acci-dent to the substructure involving extra expense, the steel gatesand some other machinery were omitted. Blocking up the ends is done by means of a pair of toggles ateach corner. These are drawn together by two bronze nuts work-ing on
