"There Was An Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe" is a popular nursery rhyme. Three theories relate to the rhyme's origin. The first theory claims that the old woman of the rhyme is Queen Caroline, the wife of King George II, who had eight children. The shoe refers to the Great Britain. The second theory claims that the rhyme refers to King George himself, who began the fashion of wearing white powdered wigs and was consequently referred to as "the Old Woman". The children were the Members of Parliament and the bed refers to the Houses of Parliament which King George required them to have sessions in. The term 'Whip' is still used in the Parliament of the United Kingdom to describe a Member of Parliament whose job is to ensure that all members 'toe the party line'. A third theory claims that the rhyme is partially based upon the story of a Margery Buttwhistle, a late 18th Century village drunk and prostitute. She is believed to have had numerous illegitimate children fathered by her various clients. Coming from a background of extreme poverty, it is claimed that the children formed the notorious “Shoe Gang” who stole the footwear of wealthy victims. Once stolen, the footwear was given to their mother, who would exchange them with her local inn keeper for alcohol and food for the children. The inn keeper stored the shoes in his cellar until they could be sold. Because of her almost constantly drunken condition, Mother Buttwhistle would rarely leave the bar, collapsing in the cellar to sleep off her drunken execesses, with only the shoes for company.
