Lenin statue in the main square of the North Caucasus city of Georgievsk in Southern Russia

One of the many Lenin sculptures which can still be found on public display in the Russia, this one in the North Caucasus city of Georgievsk. Lenin led the Communist Revolution of 1917 when the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace deposing the Tsar, leading to 74 years of Communist totalitarian rule. Communism ended in Russia in 1991. Despite an annual growth rate of 7% in the Russian economy since 1999 many Russian citizens have missed out on the gains of capitalism and the free market system as wages remain low, prices are high, and corruption continues to dominate all aspects of Russian society and government.
