The boys are sent in squads to thevarious tasks, each squad being composed of manylarge or a few small ojies, according to the require-ments of the work. One of the boysâalways anofficer, if there be one on the squadâbosses maintains almost military discipline. But before work is begun ranks are formed for asimple battalion drill of half an hour, after whichthose boys who are not wanted to make up deficien-cies in their morning recitations may play baseballfor three-quarters of an hour. At the expiration ofthis time every one must have changed to hiswork clothes ready for the afternoons task. A tap of the big bell starts a babel of calls frombosses and answers from the members of theirsquads, and all that have to work repair to thefarm, garden, or workshops. If it is not a busyseason, probably those boys owning many creditswill be free to their own devices, while their lesslucky comrades make up the deficiency in theirbank account. The acme of after-dinner bliss comesto a McDonogh boy on hunting or baseball intentwhen he can say no drill, aint kept in, andhavent got to work !
