Cancer cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a carcinoma cancer cell (yellow) migrating (metastasising) along a layer of normal epithelial cells (brown). Cancerous (malignant) cells divide rapidly and uncontrollably and are able to invade and destroy surrounding tissue. This cell is showing numerous blebs (lumps) and microvilli (hair-like structures), which are characteristic of cancer cells. Magnification: x2,350 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
