It was agreed that the youngest and strong- 17. est should go, and that Pastor Robinson should remain inLeyden, for the present, with the majority, and that thosewho were going should be under the charge and control ofWilliam Brewster, the ruling elder. They all gathered at Delfthaven,where, amid a sorrowful leave-taking, the small band wentaboard ship and sailed from the harbor on July 23, 1620, forSouthampton, where the ship Mayflower, which had beenengaged at London in taking on the stores that were to betransported, was to meet them.
