A view from no mans land of the countryside around the Hawthorn Ridge Crater, near Beaumont Hamel, France.

A view of the countryside around the Hawthorn Ridge Crater, near Beaumont Hamel, France. Hawthorn Crater (actually two craters in one in a rough figure 8 shape) is the small clump of trees on the hill opposite the camera position in centre frame. The path disappearing to the right leads to the Sunken Road where men from the 1st Bn Lancashire Fusiliers were filmed and photographed on the morning of 1st July 1916 before they went 'over the top'. This camera position would have been in the centre of no mans land with the Britsh line to the right and the German line (through the line of the Crater) on the left.
