The balsam of Peru, dissolved in five to eight parts of alcohol, may of itself be painted on. The last four com- binations are useful in itch (mange), and when thick- ening, cracks, etc., exist. The last two are excellent for cracked nipples. Balsam of Peru is rather expensive, though an excellent remedy. Follicular mange is very difficult to cure. One of the most efficacious remedies is carbolic acid. 9 Acid, carbolic 5 «•• Balsam, canadens SU> Ft. unguent. gig.: Apply carefully, heating if necessary to render sufficiently liquid, with a camel's-hair pencil, in a thin" layer over a portion of skin not to exceed two to four square inches at once, so that carbolic-acid poisoning may not follow. If necessary, muzzle the dog to prevent licking. The mereurial ointments referred to before (page 306) may also prove useful, or the balsam of Peru.
