Hollywood publicity picture of Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal in an embrace, publicising 1949 movie The Fountainhead.

During the filming of The Fountainhead (1949), the film promoted in this picture, Neal began a five-year affair with her married co-star, Gary Cooper, whom she had met in 1947 when she was 21 and he was 46. It was a stormy relationship, and a great Hollywood scandal in the 1950s. Later Neal married author Roald Dahl. She returned to the screen in middle age in The Subject Was Roses, giving an Oscar-nominated performance as the troubled mother of Martin Sheen and wife of Jack Albertson. In the 1971 pilot episode of The Waltons, Neal played Momma Walton, although the role was played by Miss Michael Learned when the series was picked up. Neal is the grandmother of British supermodel Sophie Dahl.
