Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that normally affects the lungs, but can also affect other body tissues. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It was a widespread cause of death before the use of a vaccine (from 1921) and antibiotics (from 1944). Photographed in June 1939 by Russell Lee (1903-1986) as part of a US government photography project that documented life in the USA between 1935 and 1944.
