FRACTURED BONE, DRAWING
Bone fracture is generally caused by direct or indirect trauma. Fractures may also occur spontaneously, for example when there is a pre-existing lesion (osteoporosis, tumor). Such fractures are pathological and can take on several forms. Transverse, comminutive (several fragments), oblique, and spiral fractures are described. Greenstick fracture occurs in children when one side of the bone is fractured but not the other. One fragment is firmly driven into the other fragment during an impacted fracture. Fractures must be reduced (repositioning the two fragments back in place) followed by immobilization of the limb. Bone heals by forming a callus.
