Colmar, Alsace, Grand Est, France: ‘Le Drapier’, a bearded draper or cloth merchant wearing early-17th century costume and holding a yardstick or measuring rod, stands at the corner of the timber-framed Maison zum Kragen (House of the Collar) at 9 Rue des Marchands in the historic heart of the city. The sculpted wooden corner post figure, dated 1609, wears a sleeveless doublet, a lace collar, Venetian hose and a tall hat. The corner post is an appropriate addition to the prestigious home and business premises of a prosperous merchant - but is not in its original location. It was moved from a property in Rue Berthy-Molly after Maison zum Fragen collapsed in 1586 and had to be rebuilt. The original house on the site is said to have been built by the merchant Claus Sattmann in 1419. It was rebuilt in 1588 with wooden jetties and a balustraded gallery running around an upper floor, below a sharp-pointed gable. Maison zum Kragen stands beside another of Colmar’s most historic and interesting ancient properties, Maison Pfister at 11 Rue des Marchands. It was built for a wealthy merchant in 1537 and is distinguished by another balustraded wooden gallery, an octagonal stair tower, an elaborate two-storey oriel and external murals added in 1577 by the artist Christian Vacksterffer.
