Leech. Historical artworks of three species of leech in the Sanguisuga genus. The leeches shown are S. officinalis (in the upper frame), S. medicinalis (at lower left), and S. obscura (at lower right). Many leeches live as parasites, sucking blood from larger animals. Others live as predators, eating anything that they can swallow whole. Photographed from Monographie de la famille Hirudinees (1827) by Alfred Moquin-Tandon.
