Causes of aphasia. Illustration of brain disorders and conditions that cause aphasia (loss of speech and inability to connect words and ideas). At left, a meningioma (cancer of the meninges, the brain membranes) is beginning to erode through the skull. At right of centre is a cerebral haemorrhage (red), internal bleeding from brain blood vessels. At upper right is a gummata (or gumma), a growth occurring in the tertiary stage of syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Like other intra-cranial growths, this can cause various neurological symptoms. At lower right is a brain abscess (pus from bacterial infection).
