Cannons at Fort George, Scotland

Fort George is the finest example of 18th-century military engineering to be found anywhere in the British Isles. This vast garrison fortress was begun in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden (1746), which crushed the final Jacobite Rising. Almost a mile around, Fort George encloses an area of 42 acres. Despite taking 21 years to complete and costing nearly £1 billion at today's prices, Fort George never saw a shot fired in anger. It still serves as an active military barracks today, but is open daily to visitors under the auspices of Historic Scotland.
