In May, 1864, the cavalry of the armyof the Potomac under General PhilipSheridan on his Richmond Raid, takingpart in the fights at Beaver Dam Station,Yellow Tavern, Strawberry Plains,Meadow Bridge, Ashland, Virginia, the so-called Wilsons raid, to theRichmond, Danville and South side rail-road, the command had a severe fight atReans station, Va., June 29, that engagement SergeantKoempel was surrounded and was sent to Andersonville prisonwhere he remained until September, 1864^enduring untold hardships. After the fallof Atlanta, he was removed to Charles-ton, thence to Florence, S. C, where heremained until he was paroled February14, 1865. He was finally mustered out ofthe service, August 5, 1865.
