SOLOMON IOi He prepared gold for the things to be made of gold,and silver for the things to be made of silver, and brassfor the things of brass, and iron for the things of iron,and wood for the things of wood ; also onyx-stones andall manner of precious stones and marble in great abun-dance. Of the gold of Ophir1 he gave three thousandtalents, and seven thousand talents of refined silver tooverlay the walls of the temple. All this did Davidgive to Solomon, who began to build the house of theLord at Jerusalem in Mount Moriah2 in the secondday of the second month, in the fourth year of hisreign. Solomon employed seventy thousand men to bearburdens, and eighty thousand men to hew in themountains, and thirty-six hundred men to overseethem. He sent to Hiram, King of Tyre,3 for cedar-trees, fir-trees and algum-trees out of Lebanon,4 whichwere brought in floats by sea to Joppa,5 and thencecarried to Jerusalem.
