The Wash is a large tidal, bay roughly 20 miles by 20 miles (34km x 34km), in the eastern flank of England, edged on its three landward sides by the Fen which are drained former marshes now converted to highly productive farmland. This farmland is protected from the sea by salt marshes backed by earth banks, of which this a section.
