Female Frigate bird sitting on a young chick in the nest

The frigatebird (Fregata minor) is also known as "man o' war". It is in their nesting areas where the frigatebirds are most distinctive. The males perch in bushes or sit on the rocky ground and inflate a bright red gular sac at the throat to attract the attention of potential females as they fly overhead. The female has white breast feathers that extend up to the chin (as in this picture) with a red eye-ring. Once a female is attracted, the pair builds a rough nest in shrubs or low trees, and a single egg is laid and incubated for about two months. The frigatebird has one of the longest periods of immaturity of all birds, and it may take 6 months before the chick is able to fly. The Great frigatebird nests in the Galapagos on Genovesa and San Cristobal islands.
