The explosion on the railway is of a Union ordnance train. Other ordnance trains were seton fire and were run back to Bottoms bridge, wherethey plunged into the Chickahomlny, as shown in thepicture on the next page. General Slocums division was to be at Savages Station, in reserve. Thencame Sumners corps and Heintzelmans. Keyess corps was to cross theWhite Oak Swamp at once. Porters corps had akeady crossed the swamp,and was under orders to press forward to a position on the James River. This new line was about two miles nearer the White Oak Bridge than theintrenched line in front of Fair Oaks and Goldings farm (described above),and was nearly parallel.
