Albrecht Durer's Sea Monster engraving, 16th century. One of Durer's most enigmatic engravings shows a exotically coifed maiden being abducted by a bizarre sea creature, while on the shore a man waves his arms in alarm. This curiously dreamlike scene, in which the woman appears paradoxically unruffled as her captor swims off with her, may have been based on widely believed 15th century reports of sea monster kidnapping women bathers.
