Arrow weed located in Death Valley.

The plants here aren't corn, they're arrow weed. This plant spreads using rhizomes, horizontal underground stems that give rise to new plants. The wind exposes the dense rootstock's of the arrow weed. The bare roots and tall shoots of the plants cause them to resemble corn stocks, hence the name “cornfield.”
