Beta Pictoris Venus-like planet, artwork. Planets like Venus form because they are too close to their parent star. A dense carbon dioxide atmosphere traps the star's heat, raising the surface temperature to over 500 degrees. Sulphuric acid clouds obscure the rocky surface. The surface atmospheric pressure is around 90 times that on an Earth-like planet. The Beta Pictoris star and planetary system is around 63 light years from Earth, in the constellation Pictor.
