Being at-tached to the liberal party, when SantaAnna, in 1853, a second time becamedictator of the country, Juarez, withothers of his political views, was driv-en from the country. He resided at Ha-vana and New Orleans the two follow-ing years, returning to Mexico in 1853as a participator in the insurrectionarymovement of Alvarez, by whom thedespotic government of Santa Annawas overthrown, and the Rejjublicagain set up in its place.
