Wounded at His Post on the Bridge. Wounded at his post on the bridge. Coast Guard Captain James A. Hirshfield, (right) though wounded by a piece of ricocheting metal, stayed at his post and saw his ship, the Coast Guard Cutter CAMPBELL, safely to port after contacting six German U-boats within 12 hours. Captain Hirshfield, from San Antonio, Texas, is shown above checking a code message brought to him by signal officer, Ensign Barring Coughlin of Boston, Massachusetts. Disabled when she rammed and sunk the sixth sub, the CAMPBELL was towed 800 miles to an unnamed East Coast port.
