Built on the site of a Svea pagan temple, the existing church represents part of the 12 th century cathedral built on the site after it became the centre for the cult of St Erik. It was the seat of the first Archbishop of Sweden Stefan of Alvastra, appointed in 1164. Ceiling paintings from 15 th century.
