Manchester is a city and a metropolitan borough in North West England with an estimated population of 500,000 people. It is located in the United Kingdom’s third largest urban area which has a population of over 2 million. People who are from Manchester are known as Mancunians and the local authority is the Manchester City Council. Manchester is a relatively new city, but it already had a long history before it gained its popularity, its history goes back almost two millennia. The first recorded settlement of Manchester began in Roman times. Throughout the Middle Ages it remained a township but began to expand at a increasingly fast rate. It was not until the 19th century that it became a city, only after many protests and petitions to parliament. Manchester’s urbanization was brought on by a boom in the textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution, and resulted in becoming the world’s first industrialized city. The factory building transformed Manchester from a township to a major mill town and borough that was granted its city status in 1853. In 1877 the Manchester Town Hall was build and in 1894 the Manchester Ship Canal was opened, creating the Port of Manchester. This city is known for its architecture, culture, music, social impact, sports, and scientific and engineering output. Its sports clubs include Premier League football teams, Manchester City, and Manchester United. Manchester is where scientists first split the atom and developed the first stored-program computer. Located in Manchester are two universities, including the largest single-site university in the UK. This city is also know for being the third most visited city in the UK by foreign visitors, after London and Edinburgh. Manchester’s buildings display a variety of architectural styles ranging from Victorian to contemporary. Their town hall was built in the Gothic revival style and is considered to be one of the most important Victorian buildings in England.
