Folded rock formation. Close-up of folds in a fallen block of rock. These folds are formed as the rock is deformed by immense pressures generated from within the Earth's crust as it moves over the mantle beneath. The layers indicate strata laid down to form sedimentary rocks. Lichen is also seen (orange, upper left). The area shown is about 44 centimetres across. This rock formation is located at Porth Saint, near Rhoscolyn, Anglesey, Wales.
