. Furniture for the craftsman; a manual for the student and machanic. —a Quaint Settee. tree has upon it sections which will answer for the main mem-bers of the proposed construction. Take as an example thesettee. Fig. 277. It is quite possbile to find two members whichwill pair, giving a ready-made support to seat and back. Inthis instance, being a fixed seat, sufficient length should be left OUTDOOR FURNITURE 281 to set in ground, as a fence post, previously coating the buriedportion with coal tar. It is more often accidental that the favorable location for aseat, or fiower stand, is immediately over the stump of a tree, which may be converted to the purpose of a support, to be moresubstantial than any other. Where such is the case, and otherconditions congenial to establishing a seat, such a chair illus-trated in Fig. 2/8 may be constructed at a very comfortableheight by sawing off at a somewhat extreme angle, making thefront height of seat board 17 inches from the ground. Into thisboard, which should not be less than i ]/2. inches thick, bore holes. Fig. 278.—Chair with Tree Stump for a Base. in a slanting manner near the edge, into which the spindles areinserted. These spindles and the bow should be, properly, ofhickory. A young green sapling can be bent and conformed forthe bow to an enlarged shape of the seat, securing the two endsto the front posts, which are natural curves, first being insertedin holes in the stump and secured by nailing to corner of off the under part of bow, bore the same number of holesas in seat for the spindles, giving them more flare at the spindles being selected from green hickory, averaging ^inch in diameter, may now be cut. The measure of each being 282 FURNITURE FOR THE CRAFTSMAN regulated by the bow slanting to the front, each end is thentrimmed by a chuck to fit the holes into which they are inserted, and held by wire nails driven and clinched against an iron. Afitching may now be easily worked in and out
