Dendrites in Solnhofen stone. Dendritic (branchlike) mineralisations of manganese and iron oxides are a conspicuous feature in Solnhofen limestone, a Jurassic rock from Solnhofen, Germany. The rock is widely used for decorative tiling and cladding in the building industry. The depositions seen within it take place while water containing the dissolved minerals percolates along fractures and bedding planes in the rock. The dendrites look like plant remains but have nothing to do with organic growth. Magnification: when printed 10 centimetres wide.
