Johann Kunckel (1630-1702). 1880 illustration of the German chemist Johann von Lowenstern-Kunckel. Kunkel is best known for having discovered (with Robert Boyle) the secret of the process by which Hennig Brand of Hamburg had prepared phosphorus in 1669. He also found how to make artificial ruby (red glass) by the incorporation of Purple of Cassius.
