World War I -WWI An encampment of French Zouaves who had been sent to the battle lines in taxis by Gallieni (Joseph Simon Gallieni ( 1849 – 1916),French minister of War. The Zouaves light infantry regiments of the French Army served in WWI (actually from 1830 to 1962) mostly linked to Algeria. The Zouaves, along with the indigenous Tirailleurs Algeriens were among the most decorated units in the French Army.
