First of all, they stoodat a distance and used their bows; afterward, when they had emptiedtheir quivers, they engaged in close fight with their swords andspears, and thus they continued fighting for a long time, andneither was willing to give way; but at length the Massagetse got THE CONQUEST OF ASSYRIA. 81 the better, and the greater part of the Persian army was cut inpieces on the spot, and Cyrus himself was killed, after he hadreigned twenty-nine years.
