It is interesting to compare the operationof the station machinery under the two systems. The originalstation load averaging 103 kw, with fluctuations reaching 200 kw,could be operated with machinery of 150-kw capacity at a loadfactor of 69 per cent. With the battery the fluctuations come downto 130 kw, and the station could be operated with machinery of100-kw capacity at a load factor of 100 per cent. The booster, onthe other hand, brings the fluctuations up to 400 kw and requiresthe station machinery to be of at least 250-kw capacity, operatingat an average load of about 140 kw, or 56 per cent load factor. The Fig. S. its right to exist as an industry. It has passed the stage of a newenterprise and it has reached the point where future improvementwill take the form of refinements in methods of operation. Thestorage battery offers the most inviting improvement in stationoperation that has come up since the beginning of the industry. A glance at any diagram of a railway load is all that is needed toshow the value of storage of power in a railway generating sta-tion. I have here a load curve (see Fig. 8) taken from a smallrailway where, as you see, without a battery it would be necessaryto have in operation machinery capable of developing 290 kw or500 amps, at 575 volts, which would be carrying an average loadequivalent to only 75 kw, or 130 amps. A battery was installed inthis station and the result is shown very clearly by the three curvesindicating respectively line load, battery load and generator will be interesting, I think, to lay before you in this connectionthe
