Magneto-Electric Machine dating from around 1880, England. Devices such as this one were used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism', the Magneto-Electric Machine was designed for the curing of nervous diseases. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction, it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued until the early 1900s. Galvinism takes its name from Italian physiologist, Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals. Today, the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues is known as electrophysiology.
