By this means longloose threads are more effectually burned off than in platesingeing, and a more uniform heat is applied to the graycloth. Kg. 5 is a sectional view of a very eOScient singe-iBg*«pparatu3 introduced by Messrs Mather and !ia. figure represents the first half of the machine, the<ieeoDd portion being precisely similar in arrangement Theajigeing in this cose is accomplished by the burning of aouxtiire of coal-gas and atmospheric air admitted by a pipe a, and driven by a fan mast to the burners 6, h, which are•egulated by stop-cocks. The mixture burns ? with aa. Fia 5.—Gi3 Singeing Apparatus. intense heat and a blue smokeless flame. The cloth iscarried by a series of rollers to the gas jets, and in passingover the rollers c, c, c, c the one side of the cloth impingeslaterally four times against the flame, which is nevfirpermitted to pass through the fabric, but only shaves itssurface. The back is thus singed in the first portion ofthe apparatus, and being turned over on roller d it iscarried forward to another pair of jets, where, beingthoroughly dry, the face side of the cloth is completelysinged by going over exactly the same course throughwhich the back is carried in the first part. By an arrange-ment not shown in the illustration, the attendant of themachine can instantaneously lower the gas burners by atreadle movement in case of any stoppage or accident, andthus prevent the cloth from being burned. With a properpressure of gas this machine singes
