Hewas by birth entitled to the honor of being an officer of the body-guard of the Kingof Rome. His father, the Chevalier George Romer, a retired officer of NapoleonBonapartes body-guard, had been knighted and decorated on the field of Auster-litz by the great Napoleon himself, who took off his own Cross of the Legion ofHonor and pinned it on the brave officers
