Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . nze compositioncontaining a high percentage of cop-per and tin and is intended to standlong and severe usage. The principal feature in the design of this valve isthe construction of the seat and disc, marked 12 in the cut, is providedwith a tubular extension, which entersthe valve seat ring, 13. Its principalfunction is the preservation of the scat, which is accomplished in a two-foldmanner. First, as it enters the seat, itdeflects the current of steam from theseat ring face, thus preventing thewire-drawing which would otherwiseoccur. This feature is important incase the valve should be left partlyopen for any length of time. Secondly, the seating surface is kept free fromscale and grit by the action of the thincurrent of steam discharged over it asthe disc is brought home. Another function of this extensionring is the prevention of water-ham-mer, which is caused by the suddenadmission of steam, for no matterhow quickly the hand-wheel may beoperated, this tubular extension will. IMPROVED GLOEK \^\LVE. only permit the steam to enter gradu-ally. The seat 13, which is mndc of nickel,is renewable, and can be removed fromthe valve body by using a flat bar toengage the lugs on the inside of thering. Attention is called to the factthat the seat may be reground a num-ber of times before it is necessary torenew it. Not only is the seat renew-able, but all t)f the other wearing parts, including the disc, can be renewedwhen necessary. The hub is securelyheld to the body by means of a unionring, owing to which it is impossiblefor the hub and body to become cor-roded together, as the thread whichholds the union ring to the body isprotected at all times from the actionof the steam, the joint being made be-tween the flange on the hub and theneck of the body. This connectionalso acts as a tie or binder in screwing TOOL
