He spent most of his career involved in a wide range of medical research, mostly at the Hall Institute in Melbourne, Australia. A great deal of his work involved research into viruses, including the influenza virus and its mutation rate. He also worked on viral genetics and methods of preventing viral infections. He shared the 1960 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for his discovery of acquired immunological tolerance. He was knighted in 1952 and received the Order of Merit in 1958. Photograph published in 1961.
