Caption: Kashgar, Xingiang, China - Aug 2002. Mutton kebabs cook at a backstreet market in Kashgar, Xingiang. Dating back more than 2,000 years, Kashgar sits on the far reaches of the Taklamakan Desert. Kashgar was one of the most important trading hubs on the Silk Route, greeting merchants and caravans as they passed between the East and West. Ethnically Uighur, Kashgar came under Chinese government and military control during in the mid-20th century. Despite bloody protests and uprisings, Xingiang remains under Chinese occupation, making the Uighurs a minority in their own homeland.
