At Platz der Republik on the Spree River. The library is in the former East Berlin sector, as is the Spree River. A tourist river boat is cruising on the river and the memorial "Weisse Kreuze" (White Crosses) is on the foreground bank of the river, which was in the western sector of Berlin. The memorial serves as a reminder of those who died trying to escape to West Berlin after the border was sealed off.
