. The street railway review . ed by Da\id Winters, astreet railway employe of the Pueblo, Col, city railwaylines. The plan is, in short, a friction clutch operatingagainst a friction plate fastened inside the flange. Theclutch is supported by the axle which revolves inside thesleeve of the clutch. This sleeve is kept constantlyoiled. Two chains are bolted to the sleeve, one aboveand one below. The friction rim is fastened to thewheel and is a separate part of the device. When it isdesired to brake the car the clutch is thrown in on theaxle by means of the ordinary brake lever or ratchethandle and the arms of the clutch press against the fric-tion rim. This immediately tightens up the chain andpulls the lever of the ordinary brake. The chain is at-tached to the brake beam, so that no change of the stylein use need be made. The mechanism simply performsthe work of applying the brake. The clutch is carriedonly a quarter of an inch from the friction plate on thewheel when the brake is off, so that very little exertion. on the part of the motorman sets the brake as tight asmaybe desired. When a gradual stop is wanted, a meretouch will begin to slacken the speed and this may beincreased as much as is necessary. The chains do notwind around the axle sleeve but are bolted at the top andbottom, so that only a quarter of a wheel revolution isrequired to apply the brakes hard enough to slide thewheels. Our engraving shows this attachment of thechain and the means of connecting it with the brakebeam. In the same figure the friction plate is i shows the clutch on the axle carrying a motorto illustrate the small amount of room necessary for thedevice. As will be readily seen the idea is not to create a newbrake but to make a new, positive clutch attachment forapplying any style of brake. In short, the clutch per-forms the function of the brake cjlinder on air brakes. The Pueblo street railway has made tests of theappliance, and General Manager H. E. Chubbuck isgreatly
