The accompanying illustration shows the Burt ManufacturingCos. style B oil filter which is designed to take the condensationfrom the oil separators and heads, automatically separatethe oil from the water and purify the oil at the same time, thepure oil going into the pure oil reservoir and the water runningfrom the drip into the sewer. The oil and water are poured in the top of the filter and thenpass into chamber B through the layer of waste which collectsall the heavier impurities of the oil; from thence through the per-forated bottom of chamber B in the direction shown by the arrowsinto tube C, and from here to filter plate D, where the increasedweight of the water has a tendency to keep the oil back in tube pressure of oil in chamber B forces it down and spreads itout over plate D in a very thin film, which constantly changes sur- AUTOMATIC WATERSEPARATIMGAPPARATi -. It then flows upon plates D and D,going through the same process in each case. When the oil leavesthe filter plate D it is in a finely divided state of separation andthoroughly mixed with water, which washes it out and from whichit separates by gravity all the remaining impurities which settle inchamber E and which can be removed by opening the gate valveat the bottom of the filter, which action drains off all the waterand dirt. From plate D the oil filters through the stratum of filter-ing material F and from there it rises to the pure oil chamberand flows to the oil rescrvoii. The water is automatically loparated after it passes down thetube C and reaches the bollom , as the oil being lighter thanwater rises when it reaches the bottom of the filter,
