Mrs. Ely, the author of "A Woman's Hardy Garden," says: "The most satisfactory of the Campanula family is the single biennial variety known as Campanula Medium, or Canterbury Bells. In the spring a little fine manure and some bonemeal should be dug about each plant, and the stalks of bloom, which, if well cared for, will be nearly three feet in height, should be staked. If the flowers are cut immediately upon fading, the period of blooming can be prolonged to about six ; The Canterbury Bells are most effective when planted along the borders in front of early varieties of Phlox, which blossom at the same time. The best perennial varieties of Campanula are C. Car- patica, C. Persicifolia and C. Pyramidalis. Campanula Pyramidalis will send up stalks to bloom by the middle of August from four to six feet in height, and continue to bloom for six weeks. Being a strong grower, this plant requires rich soil, and if liquid manure be applied around the roots from the time the buds begin to form, the the number and size of the flowers will be greatly increased. A few of these plants grown in large pots make a beautiful decoration for terrace or piazza, well rewarding the time and trouble in raising ; Carpatica {Carpathian Hair-Bell).
