The massive number of batteries required is evident in the truck bottom right. The trolleys on the left have a ‘grab’ device at the front to enable them to move barrels around the warehouses and quays. One of these (centre) has the manufacturer’s name embossed on it – Greenwood and Batley of Leeds, Yorkshire. In the early years of motor transport electrically-powered vehicles were a good option compared with petrol driven ones for short-distance commercial transport, such as moving goods around docks and warehouses or local deliveries in towns and cities.
