Acurious practice of the I bans on setting such a trapis to measure the appropriate height of the spear bymeans of a rod surmounted with a carving of ahuman figure (Fig. 23). VOL. A rude fence somehundreds of yards, in somecases as much as a mile, in. length, is made by filling upwith sticks and brushwood thespaces between the trees andundergrowth of the jungle. Atintervals of ten or twenty yardsnarrow gaps are left, and in eachof these a jerat is set to catchthe small creatures that, in i# Fig. 23.
