Nose mucosa. Light micrograph of a section through the nasal mucosa, the tissue that lines the airways of the nose. The epithelium (pink band, right) is made up of ciliated columnar cells. Goblet cells (small pockets in the epithelial layer, right) secrete mucus onto the surface of the nasal cavity (white, right). The cilia are coated in this sticky mucus, which serves to trap dust and pathogens. The large pocket is a Bowman's gland that secretes serum along with mucus. Azan stain. Magnification: x30 when printed 10cm wide.
